Scolibrace for Adults: Your Guide to Relief & Support

Scolibrace for Adults

At ChiroSolutions Center, we see adults with scoliosis every day who believe they simply have to live with pain and discomfort. I’m Dr. Samantha Coleman, as a specialist in non-surgical scoliosis treatment, I’ve witnessed remarkable improvements in patients who thought relief wasn’t possible. Let me walk you through what you need to know about adult scoliosis and how the Scolibrace can be a game-changer for your quality of life.

Understanding Adult Scoliosis

Adult scoliosis differs significantly from the condition we see in adolescents. While the curved spine may look similar on an X-ray, the causes, progression, and treatment approaches are quite different.

There are two main types of adult scoliosis we treat in our Virginia Beach practice. The first is degenerative (or de novo) scoliosis, which develops later in life as the spine begins to wear down. The second is pre-existing adolescent scoliosis that persisted into adulthood, often worsening over time.

What causes adult scoliosis? Several factors can contribute, including:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Arthritic changes in the spine
  • Osteoporosis and bone density loss
  • Muscular imbalances that develop over decades
  • Prior spinal surgeries or injuries

The symptoms experienced by our adult patients typically go beyond just the visible curve. Do you struggle with chronic back pain that worsens throughout the day? Notice that your clothes fit unevenly or that you’re becoming shorter? Feel fatigued after standing for short periods? These are all common symptoms we see, along with postural imbalance, reduced flexibility, and in some cases, breathing difficulties or digestive issues.

Diagnosis of Adult Scoliosis

Before we can recommend appropriate treatment, a thorough diagnosis is essential. In our practice, we begin with a comprehensive physical examination and review of your medical history. We’ll discuss when you first noticed symptoms, how they impact your daily life, and what treatments you may have tried previously.

Imaging is crucial for accurate diagnosis. X-rays allow us to visualize the curve and measure what we call the Cobb angle – the standard measurement of scoliosis severity. In some cases, we may recommend an MRI or CT scan to provide additional information about disc health, nerve compression, or bone density.

Beyond just measuring the curve, we evaluate your overall postural alignment and spinal stability. How is your balance? Are your shoulders level? Is one hip higher than the other? This comprehensive approach ensures we understand not just the curve itself, but how it’s affecting your entire body.

The Role of Bracing in Adult Scoliosis Treatment

When I mention bracing to my adult patients, many are surprised. “Isn’t that just for kids?” they ask. Not anymore. The goals of bracing for adults are quite different from those for adolescents – and understanding these differences is key to setting realistic expectations.

Goals of Bracing for Adults

For most adults, complete correction of the curve isn’t the primary aim. Instead, we focus on:

  1. Pain relief and management of discomfort by providing structural support
  2. Improved postural alignment to reduce muscle strain and fatigue
  3. Stabilizing the spine to prevent further progression
  4. Enhancing mobility and function in daily activities

In my years of practice, I’ve found that many adults experience significant pain reduction within weeks of beginning a properly designed bracing program. One patient described it as “finally having the support my body has been crying out for.”

Effectiveness of Bracing in Adults

As a non-surgical treatment option, bracing has shown promising results in numerous studies. Research consistently demonstrates improvements in pain levels, postural alignment, and quality of life measures. Some studies even show that custom braces like the Scolibrace may slow or halt curve progression in adults – something previously thought impossible.

However, the effectiveness depends heavily on two factors: proper brace design and consistent wear. A brace that’s custom-made using 3D scanning technology (like the ones we provide) delivers significantly better results than off-the-shelf options. And while wearing schedules are typically less demanding for adults than adolescents, following your recommended plan is essential for success.

We’ve found that bracing works best as part of a comprehensive approach. When combined with targeted exercises, manual therapy, and lifestyle modifications, the results can be truly life-changing.

Types of Scoliosis Braces for Adults

Not all scoliosis braces are created equal, and the right choice depends on your specific condition, lifestyle, and treatment goals. Let’s explore the main options available:

Rigid Braces (TLSO – Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral Orthosis)

The Boston Brace is one of the most common types we see. It covers the torso from below the arms to the hips and is designed primarily to support the spine and prevent progression. While effective, it can be somewhat restrictive and visible under clothing.

The Wilmington Brace offers a similar design but closes in the front rather than the back, making it easier to put on and take off independently – an important consideration for adults with mobility limitations.

The Milwaukee Brace (CTLSO) extends higher with a neck ring component, making it suitable for treating higher curves. However, due to its bulkiness and visibility, it’s less commonly used today, especially for adults concerned about aesthetics.

Custom 3D Braces like the Scolibrace

This is where significant advancements have been made in recent years. The Scolibrace uses cutting-edge 3D scanning and computer-aided design to create a truly custom orthosis. What makes the Scolibrace different? Unlike traditional braces that simply hold the spine in place, Scolibrace is designed based on the principle of overcorrection – actively pushing the spine toward a better alignment while being worn.

In my practice, we’ve seen remarkable results with Scolibrace for adults. The precision fit means better comfort, greater effectiveness, and improved compliance. Many patients tell me they forget they’re wearing it after the initial adjustment period.

Flexible or Dynamic Braces

Options like the SpineCor brace use elastic materials that allow more movement than rigid designs. While these can be more comfortable and less visible under clothing, they generally provide less support and correction potential for adults with significant curves or stiff spines. They may be appropriate for adults with smaller, more flexible curves or those who cannot tolerate rigid bracing.

Nighttime Bending Braces

The Charleston Bending Brace and Providence Brace are designed specifically for nighttime wear. They place the spine in an overcorrected position while sleeping. While popular for adolescents, these braces have limited applications for most adults with scoliosis, as they require a flexibility that adult spines often lack.

Supportive Braces

For adults primarily seeking pain relief rather than curve correction, softer supportive braces may be sufficient. These don’t address the scoliosis directly but can provide welcome relief during activities that typically trigger pain.

A Path Forward with Scolibrace

Living with adult scoliosis doesn’t mean resigning yourself to pain and limitation. Modern bracing options, particularly the custom-designed Scolibrace, offer a middle path between passive acceptance and invasive surgery.

At ChiroSolutions Center in Virginia Beach, we’ve seen countless adults find new hope through comprehensive treatment that includes custom bracing. Many patients who thought they were “too old” for effective treatment discover significant pain reduction, improved posture, and enhanced quality of life.

If you’re struggling with adult scoliosis, I encourage you to explore your options. Bracing may not reverse time or completely eliminate your curve, but it can provide meaningful relief and support that allows you to live more comfortably and actively.

Remember, it’s never too late to seek better alignment – for your spine and your life.
